Frequently Asked Questions

Hypnobirthing and antenatal, common questions

What do you offer?
Private hypnobirthing is the heart of it. It's one to one, at your home or fully online over Zoom/Meet, and built around your birth, your questions and your partner. Alongside that there's the Practical Birth Workshop, pilates and hypnobirthing with Anna, and the Second Birth Evening for mums preparing for baby number two. A group hypnobirthing course is coming in January. Details and prices are on each page.

What makes it different from other antenatal or hypnobirthing classes?
Most courses mention hypnobirthing. Maybe a slide, maybe a leaflet, maybe a relaxation at the end. Hypnobirthing isn't something you're told about once. It's something you practise until it's automatic, because in labour you won't have the headspace to think. That takes proper time, and it's what I give it. It's also the thing mums in my baby classes most often say they wish they'd had.

What does it actually cover?
How labour works and what your body is doing while it's doing it. The breathing and tools you practise until they come without thinking. The decisions coming up that nobody tells you are yours, like sweeps, induction and the third stage, and how to ask about them calmly. And what your birth partner can actually do to help.

I've done or booked something like NCT. Will there be repetition?
Very little. Hypnobirthing sits well alongside an antenatal course. One tells you what happens, and the other gives you a way to work with it.

Does hypnobirthing actually work?
It won't promise a pain-free birth, and nobody honest will. What it does is help you understand what's happening, work with the sensations rather than against them, and make decisions with a clearer head. Many NHS trusts now offer or signpost hypnobirthing, and plenty of women say it changed how they felt about their birth, however it went.

Is it only for straightforward births?
No. It's for every kind of birth, at home or in hospital, in water or on a bed, caesarean, with or without pain relief. The tools work alongside anything.

Does my birth partner need to come?
In private sessions they learn alongside you, not just watching. That means the counter pressure, the words that help, and your choices, so they can speak up for you when it matters. For the group course, partners are welcome, and you're just as welcome to come on your own.

When's the best time to start?
Most people start around 25 to 30 weeks, which leaves time to practise. Earlier is lovely, and later still works. Get in touch and we'll work out what fits.

Is there anyone who should check with a doctor first?
Yes. If you have epilepsy, a heart condition, a sleep disorder, severe asthma or a history of psychosis, check with your GP or midwife first. Please don't use the relaxation tracks while driving or operating machinery.

Are you properly qualified?
Yes. I've been an early years teacher for nearly twenty years, including school leadership, and I trained in hypnobirthing with Love Your Birth. I also work in breastfeeding, postnatal and newborn support with NestBaby, and keep my training current through ongoing CPD with The Birth Academy and NestBaby.

Can I talk to you before booking?
Of course. Message me and we'll arrange a quick call to answer your questions and work out which option suits you.

How do I book?
From the relevant page, or tell me your due date and I'll tell you what fits.

Frequently asked questions

Baby Classes

The Baby Collection, common questions

What are the classes?
Small, calm classes for you and your baby, built around baby massage and, as they grow, baby yoga. There's a one-off Baby Sanctuary session too. All of them are a good way to support your baby's development, learn something you can use at home, and meet other mums at the same stage.

Baby massage, what is it and who's it for?
A gentle five-week block where you learn a full massage sequence to use at home. It can ease trapped wind and soothe an unsettled baby, and it's calm time that builds the bond between you. Plenty of mums find it settles them as much as the baby. For babies from around 6 weeks until they start rolling.

Baby yoga, what is it and who's it for?
Gentle movement and singing pitched at what your baby's working on as they grow, with a little stretch-and-breathe time for you. It's the natural next step from massage as they get more active. For babies who are a bit older and starting to want more going on.

Bedtime Rituals, what is it?
A monthly morning session for up to three babies, where you learn a calming bedtime routine to use at home. For babies from 6 weeks to 4 months. Details are on the booking page.

What's the early years side I keep seeing mentioned?
I taught in early years for nearly twenty years, so I bring a bit of that into class, gently. Noticing what your baby's drawn to, what they're working on at each stage, and following those natural patterns as they grow. It's less about activities and more about helping you read your baby.

Do I need to bring anything?
Everything's provided, including the massage oil. You might like to bring a large muslin or towel. Just bring spare nappies and anything you'd normally need for your baby.

What should my baby wear?
For massage, they're most comfortable in just a nappy. Bring a couple of layers so they're easy to dress again afterwards.

What if I've never done this before?
No experience needed. I'll guide you through every step, so you'll feel confident by the end.

What happens if my baby cries?
Completely normal, and nobody minds. You're welcome to comfort or feed your baby whenever they need it. It's a relaxed, no-pressure hour.

Can I feed my baby during the session?
Of course. It's a baby-led hour, so feed whenever you need to.

Is baby massage safe?
Yes, safe and gentle when a trained practitioner shows you how. I'll take you through each stroke so you're doing it in a way that's safe and soothing.

Can I come with twins?
Yes. Twins and siblings close in age are very welcome at no extra charge, and I'll help you include and support both babies.

Will it help my baby's development?
Yes. The classes support your baby's physical, emotional and social development, and it's early time together that's genuinely good for them, and good for you.
